And that legacy endures to this your humble scribe spent three days in Canada driving the new Volkswagen camper van, the California Ocean, around the southern half of Nova Scotia, covering over 400 miles of pine-lined rustic shores and sprawling interior farmlands. Although VW sent us to this Canadian coastal province to drive a van named after the state son closely identified with boxy Vee-Dubs, neither Canadians nor Californians can have one; itâs not sold in North America. A few new touches include aluminum handles for the interior cabinetry, wood trim and flooring, new push-to-release mechanisms for some of the kitchen appliances and updated upholstery. Though some of these details may feel small on their own, they add up to a vehicle that feels much more like a home than a van ought course, there are still some classic features it shares with some of the camper vans of yore. The California is still fitted with that iconic feature, the pop-top roof bed that sleeps an additional two people. Unlike the Microbuses and Westfalias of the past, these new iterations arenât a canvas tent with a sliding piece of wood for a bed. The has a new bed design with a built-in box spring and queen-size mattress surrounded by a sturdy, almost white-water-raft like material, and it can be deployed in less than two minutes with the push of a button. The van also has a digital pitch gauge allowing the driver to find a level spot setting up you decide, like I did, to forgo the new alarm clock feature (in which the cabin lights gently fade on at whatever time you choose), the pop-up tent has zip-open flaps on all four walls to allow the sunrise to wake you. Doch allein bei Volkswagen kamen 3 Modelle in Frage. Der California Beach, California Coast und das Flaggschiff der California Ocean, welcher auch als Hotel California bekannt ist. Die Entscheidung ist uns nicht leicht gefallen. Ausgangssituation Wir hatten seit vielen Jahren unseren geliebten VW T5 California und suchten einen passenden Diesel Nachfolger mit Euro 6 Norm, um damit hoffentlich auch zukĂŒnftig in gröĂere StĂ€dte fahren zu können. Letzte Woche dann ein Beitrag im Spiegel, das VW die Auslieferung des VW T6 gestoppt hat, weil die Stickoxidwerte zu hoch sind. Kein gutes Vorzeichen, aber angeblich kann es mit einem Softwareupdate behoben werden. Vielleicht wĂ€re der Mercedes Marco Polo oder der Marco Polo Horizon doch die bessere Wahl. Der Konzern stand mit solchen Themen zumindest noch nie im Rampenlicht. Die KĂŒchenzeile kommt im Marco Polo sehr edel daher. In Kombination mit den Schiffsdiehlen als Bodenbelag und der indirekten Beleuchtung geht das schon fast Richtung Glamping. Wir sind zwei Erwachse nicht besonders groĂ (unter 180 cm;), mit unseren zwei Kindern aktuell 8 und 9 Jahre alt und unserem Hund Lenny. Wir haben nur ein Auto und leben stadtnah und besuchen auch gern im Urlaub StĂ€dte, so dass ein Tiefgaragen taugliches Fahrzeug fast ein muss fĂŒr uns ist. Was spricht fĂŒr ein fahrendes Hotel VW California Ganz einfach â der Komfort. Das haben wir in unseren California zumindest sehr geschĂ€tzt. Denn die gut 30 cm breiten KĂŒchenzeile ist eigentlich auch der gröĂte Unterschied zwischen den California Modellen. Dieser Einbau ermöglicht das Abwaschen in einem kleinen SpĂŒlbecken, das 2-flammige Kochen auf einem Gasherd und beherbergt den 42 Liter groĂen Kompressor KĂŒhlschrank. Entspannt zu zweit kochen und den Abend genieĂen. Der weitere Platz von dem Möbel wird noch fĂŒr die zweite Batterie, den Frisch- und Abwassertank und die Gasversorgung geschickt genutzt. Alles was jetzt noch ĂŒbrig bleibt, ist Stauraum. Damit kann man schon was Anfang, auch als 4-köpfige Familie mit Hund. Blick in den Kompressor KĂŒhlschrank vom Hotel California. Der California Coast und Ocean warten aber noch mit zusĂ€tzlichem Stauraum auf. Denn die zweier Sitzbank zum Umklappen hat eine riesige Schublade, die fĂŒr den gesamten Proviant verwendet werden kann. Echt genial, auch wenn dadurch keine gröĂeren GegenstĂ€nde wie Snowboards durchgeladen werden können. Im hinteren oberen Bereich befindet sich ein weiterer Stauraum, der meistens fĂŒr die gesamten Klamotten unserer Kinder (in den Sommerurlauben) ausreichen musste. Ein zusĂ€tzlicher kleiner Tisch kann zudem noch neben der Sitzbank vorgeschoben und ausgeklappt werden. Wobei der von der GröĂe zu viert schon recht klein ist, aber fĂŒr ein FrĂŒhstĂŒck mit MĂŒsli und Kaffee noch funktioniert. FĂŒr ein gemĂŒtliches FrĂŒhstĂŒck zu viert ist der Tisch einfach zu klein. Hinten sind noch die zusĂ€tzlichen FĂ€cher fĂŒr den Stauraum zu sehen. Beim California Ocean ist das Aufstelldach zudem noch elektrisch. Die Gefahr, dass die irgendwann nicht mehr schlieĂt ist natĂŒrlich immer da, aber das Dach kann wohl auch manuell geschlossen werden. Nach 8 Jahren mussten wir zudem die Hydraulikpumpe fĂŒr mehrere hundert Euro tauschen lassen. Durch die Ausstattung kann ohne groĂes beladen sofort in den Urlaub oder in das Wochenende gestartet werden und alles ist dabei â das nenne ich Freiheit. Die Modelle sind aus unserer Sicht nicht flexibel genug. StandardmĂ€Ăig können nur 4 Personen mitfahren. Die KĂŒchenzeile nimmt jedoch auch bei Transporten wie UmzĂŒgen einfach zu viel Platz weg. Die RĂŒcksitzbank ist so schwer, dass Sie praktisch nicht alleine ausgebaut werden kann (bei Einzelsitzen verhĂ€lt es sich Ă€hnlich). Wir sind im Schnitt wahrscheinlich 2 Monate im Jahr Campen, das sind gerade mal 16,6 %. Im Alltag wird der Bus jedoch tĂ€glich, also 83,3 % der Zeit genutzt. FĂŒr uns sind im Alltag immer mal wieder 6 Sitze sinnvoll, um auch mal ein paar Freunde oder die Eltern mitnehmen zu können, wenn man schon einen Bus hat sollte das doch das mindeste sein, oder? Dann haben wir auch noch das Thema Preis. Ja die Modelle sind alle sehr teuer und unterscheiden sich auch nur geringfĂŒgig von dem Mercedes Marco Polo. Aber fĂŒr eine unflexible Lösung auch noch bis Euro mehr bezahlen, ist aus unserer Sicht keine Option. An dieser Stelle spielen natĂŒrlich die ganzen individual Ausbauer wie Custom Bus oder Spacecamper & Co. ihre StĂ€rken aus. Sie bieten Konzepte die beides in einem vereinen und sehr flexibel sind. Um an dieser Stelle mal exemplarisch einen Punkt zu nennen: Die RĂŒcksitzbank vom Spacecamper: Sie kann alleine in wenigen Minuten ausgebaut werden. Sie hat ein groĂe Schublade mit jeder menge Stauraum, welche auch ausgebaut werden kann, um lange GegenstĂ€nde durchzuladen. Perfekt! Was spricht fĂŒr den California Beach Der California Beach ist eigentlich ein Multivan mit einer soliden Camping Ausstattung. Der Beach kommt mit dem Schienensystem daher, ĂŒber welches die Sitzbank flexibel verschoben werden kann und bis zu 2 weitere Einzelsitze zu der 3-Sitzbank ergĂ€nzt werden können. So entsteht 7 vollwertige Sitze mit Armlehnen und 3-Punkt Gurt. Die Sitzbank kann umgeklappt werden und zusammen mit dem Multiflexboard ensteht ein groĂzĂŒgiges Bett. Durch die sportliche Kontur der Sitzbank ist eine zusĂ€tzliche Matratze als Auflage zu empfehlen. Einziger Nachteil bei dem bett ist die Höhe in Schlafposition. Denn diese ist ein gutes StĂŒck höher wie im Coast und Ocean, so dass bei aufrechtem Sitzen auf dem Bett unser Kopf am Himmel anstöĂt. Die Camping Ausstattung des Beach Hochdach fĂŒr 2 Personen mit Lattenrost (120 cm x 200 cm) Bett im Wohnraum (155 cm x 200 cm) Verdunklung mit Rollos bis auf die vorderen Seitenfenster und die Windschutzscheibe Campingtisch in der SchiebetĂŒre 2 CampingstĂŒhle in der Heckklappe Multiflexboard nach Aufpreis Zweitbatterie nach Aufpreis Beim Coast und Ocean gibt es fĂŒr die Verdunkelung der Windschutzscheibe Rollos im Beach nur einen Stoff, welcher an den Sonnenblenden und dem RĂŒckspiegel fixiert wird. Die Verdunkelung der Seitenfenster sehen beim Mercedes Horizon aus wie in einem Leichenwagen. Hier muss aus meiner Sicht noch mal nachgebessert werden. Fazit California Beach gegen Coast & Ocean Wer den Bus im Alltag nutzt und mehr wie 2 Kinder hat, wird den Beach lieben. Allerdings fehlt natĂŒrlich noch ein bisschen Zubehör, damit der Camping Urlaub auch wirklich perfekt wird. Hier findet Ihr ein paar Inspirationen und Ideen fĂŒr flexible Campingmöbel zum Ausbau von eurem Campingbus. Mit 4 Personen sind tĂ€gliche Umbauten jedoch vorprogrammiert und dem kompakten Campingbus geschuldet. If this was a straight review of the Volkswagen California Beach, I donât think many of you would hang around to read it, so I thought Iâd tell you what we got up to with it and use that as a method to pass on some done this before, in a Bentley Mulsanne and an Audi S8, but they were more ironic in tone because we did things with them that you normally wouldnât. This time, weâve taken a camper van and done with it exactly what you would expect â headed to Scotland and used it to sleep in. Well, it was either that or a hot lap of the Nurburgring, but Iâve already done that (four-up in a Range Rover full of holiday kit â but thatâs another story).Anyway, the California is based on the new T6 van that launched last year. Visually thereâs not much to tell itâs new, just cleaner, more integrated lights, and a bit of smoothing. Itâs fitted only with a diesel, with three power outputs: 102, 150 and 204bhp. The upper two can be had with four-wheel drive and 7spd DSG gearboxes, the base one makes do with a five speed start at ÂŁ38,214 for a base Beach and climb to ÂŁ55,790 for a fully kitted Ocean. Now, ignoring the daft names, the difference between Beach and Ocean is crucial. The Ocean is the fully kitted camper with sink, fridge, stove, cupboards, flip-up table, electric roof, the works. The Beach is the lightweight RS version â youâll need to supply your own cooking, storage, washing and chilling facilities. Without all of that you get a much wider bed when the seats are laid flat. Still gets the pop up roof, but here itâs manual. Model for model you save a whisker over ÂŁ8,000 doing without.
